Niza: Costa azul. Sitio donde veraneaba la aristocracia en los siglos XIX y XX. Lujo. Playas azul turquesa. Poco más sabía de esta ciudad situada en la Costa Azul francesa a pocos kilómetros de Mónaco. Este fin de semana he conocido una de las mejores cosas que ofrece la ciudad: sus Carnavales, de fama cada vez mayor.

Hasta hace unos días, sabía de los Carnavales de Rio de Janeiro en Brasil, de Canarias en España y los Carnavales de Venecia. Hoy puedo añadir a esa lista los Carnavales de Niza. Espectaculares y sin nada que envidiar a los otros.

Nice: Côte d´Azur. Place where the aristocracy used to go on vacation during the 19th and 20th centuries. Luxury. Beaches with turquoise blue water. I only knew a little bit about this city located on the French Riviera, a few kilometers away from Mónaco. This weekend I have visited one of the best things that the city offers: its Carnivals,  of increasing fame.

Until a few days ago, I knew about the Carnivals of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the Carnivals in Canary Islands in Spain and the Carnivals in Venice, Italy. Today I can add to that list the Carnivals of Nice. Spectacular and with nothing to envy the others.

Este viaje sin lugar a dudas creo que ha marcado un antes y después en mi vida como «Travel Blogger». Ha sido el primer «Press Trip» que he realizado y que espero que sea el primero de muchos más. Ha sido una experiencia increíble. He conocido a una gente majísima, periodistas y otros travel bloggers como yo. He visitado por primera vez la Costa Azul francesa, que he de decir que estaba en esa lista de sitios pendientes que tenía por visitar, y he podido conocer unos Carnavales increíbles. Esta fiesta ha sido grande en todos los sentidos, con unos shows que no tienen nada que envidiar a otros, un nivel de calidad altísimo, de organización, de todo.

Los Carnavales de Niza duran dos semanas. Este año empezaron el sábado 17 de Febrero y terminaron este pasado 3 de Marzo. 3 fines de semana cargados de desfiles y de shows espectaculares.

Tienen dos desfiles principales que se celebran con variaciones varios días: el Desfile de las Flores y el Desfile de las Luces.  Os hablaré en este post del Desfile de las Flores.

I think this trip has marked without a doubt a before and after in my life as «Travel Blogger». It has been the first «Press Trip» I’ve done and I hope it’s the first of many more to come. It has been an amazing experience. I have met some amazing people, journalists and other travel bloggers like me, I have visited the French Riviera for the first time, which was on the list of places I wanted to visit for so long,  and I have been able to get to know some incredible Carnivals. This celebration have been great in every way, with amazing Shows and a high level of quality, a great organization, everything was perfect. 

The Carnivals in Nice lasts more than two weeks. This year they began on Saturday, February 17th and ended this past March the 3rd. Three weekends full of parades and spectacular shows.

They have two parades that are celebrated with some variations during several days: the Parade of Flowers and the Parade of Lights. I will tell you in this post about the Parade of Flowers.

Desfile de las Flores / Flowers Parade

Se trata de un desfile que tiene lugar varios días, siempre de día, a las 2 pm. Desfilan 16 carrozas decoradas con flores donde la gente que desfila con maravillosos disfraces, la música, el olor de las flores y todos los colores se mezclan. Reconocido en todo el mundo por su competencia en el campo de la astronomía, Niza ha elegido este año celebrar el Carnaval «El Rey del Espacio». El Espacio ha estado en las noticias en los últimos años, con el descubrimiento de nuevos planetas, estrellas, asteroides y otros cuerpos celestes etc. El Espacio es fascinante y está de vuelta en los titulares con ambiciones para el turismo en el espacio. El Observatorio de Niza se ha convertido uno de los principales centros internacionales de investigación del universo.

It is a parade that takes place during several days, always during daytime,  at 2 pm. The parade is composed of 16 floats decorated with flowers where the people who participate  wearing wonderful costumes, music, the smell of flowers and all colors are mixed. The Space has been in the news over the recent years, with the discovery of new planets, stars, asteroids and other celestial bodies etc. The Space is fascinating and is back in the headlines with ambitions for space tourism. The Nice Observatory has become one of the main international research centers of the universe. Recognized around the world for its competence in the field of astronomy, Nice has chosen this year to celebrate the Carnival «The King of Space».

Antecedentes Históricos / Historical Background

Este desfile tiene antecedentes históricos. El Carnaval como tal nació unido a ritos paganos y viene de las palabras «Carne» y «Levare» que significa «Carne Prohibida».  La primera moción que tenemos del Carnaval de Niza fue en 1294. Un siglo más tarde fue ganando importancia y se empezó a pagar por entrar. Sólo unos pocos años más tarde nació el «Desfile de las Flores» como un simple intercambio de flores, mostrando éstas, las flores, de producción local y convirtiéndolo en un todo Espectáculo! Sí, con mayúscula. Es un evento único que se ha convertido en una de las celebraciones más famosas de la Costa Azul y ha inspirado a otros como Rio, Pasadena en California, etc.

This parade has a historical background. Carnival as such was born linked to pagan rites and comes from the words «Carne» and «Levare» which means «Forbidden Meat». The first motion we have of the Carnival of Nice was in 1294. A century later it was gaining importance and began to pay to enter. Only a few years later the «Parade of Flowers» was born as a simple exchange of flowers, showing these, the flowers, of local production and turning it into a whole show! Yes, with a capital letter. It is a unique event that has become one of the most famous celebrations of the Costa Azul and has inspired others like Rio, Pasadena in California, etc.

 Animadores y bailarines / Artists & Dancers

Estas 16 carrozas se acompañan de bandas de música en directo y de música ambiental que invita a los participantes a bailar. Así mismo, cuenta con varias performances y animadores que hacen de este carnaval una mezcla de fantasía y realidad. En total, 60 bailarines, acróbatas y artistas del circo que se encargan de acompañar y animar el Desfile. Así mismo, un gran número de músicos y artistas se encargan también de darle ritmo y color. Ambos desfiles, el de las Flores y el de Las Luces comienzan con una coreografía y acaban con un deslumbrante final de la mano de estos grandes animadores como una especie de firma.

These 16 floats are accompanied by live music bands and ambient music that invites participants to dance. Likewise, it has several performances and animators that make this carnival a mixture of fantasy and reality. In total, 60 dancers, acrobats and circus artists are in charge of accompanying and animating the Parade. Likewise, a large number of musicians and artists are also responsible for giving rhythm and color. Both parades, the one of the Flowers and the one of the Lights start with a choreography and finish with a dazzling end of the hand of these great animators like a signature.

Ningbo in Nice

Este año, los encargados de presentar el Carnaval de Niza fue esta ciudad costera de China, ubicada cerca de Shanghai,  en un intento por promover el turismo de Ningbo en este país europeo. La boda personalizada de la «Dote de las Diez Millas Rojas» formó parte del Carnaval de Niza este año, mostrando la costumbre tradicional de las bodas en China.

This year, those responsible for presenting the Carnival of Nice was this coastal city of China, located near Shanghai,  in an attempt to promote Ningbo tourism in this European country. The personalized wedding of the «Endowment of the Ten Red Miles» was part of the Carnival of Nice this year showing the traditional custom of weddings in China.

Las Flores / The Flowers

El Desfile de las Flores exalta la importancia que las flores tienen para los franceses de la Costa Azul. Todas las carrozas están decoradas con motivos florales y en ellas van chicas lanzando flores a todos los visitantes, de nuevo llevando unos impresionantes vestidos basados en temas florales. En una de esas carrozas va la Reina del Carnaval. Estas «batallas» de flores están en sintonía con las carrozas del Carnaval. Su preparación se hace de una manera muy meticulosa pero en un tiempo récord y es llevada a cabo por los mejores floristas y maestros en el arte de decorar con flores.

The Flowers Parade extols the importance that flowers have for the French Riviera. All the floats are decorated with floral motifs and on them girls go throwing flowers to all visitors, wearing impressive dresses based on floral themes. In one of those floats goes the Carnival Queen. These «battles» of flowers are in tune with the Carnival floats. Its preparation is done in a very meticulous way but in a record time and it is carried out by the best florists and masters in the art of decorating with flowers.

Los Trajes / The Costumes

Los trajes se crean en un taller especialmente dedicado a esto y cada traje es único con detalles distintos, no hay ninguno igual, como pasa en el teatro o en la ópera. Se preparan de acuerdo al tema elegido ese año para el Carnaval. Deben permitir a los bailarines y a las chicas poder moverse libremente para poder interactuar con el público. Suelen ser de inspiración circense. Se tarda unas 40 horas para hacer el más simple y unas 200 para el traje que llevará la Reina del Carnaval.

The costumes are created in a workshop specially dedicated to this and each costume is unique with different details, there are no duplicates as it happens in the theater or in the opera. They are prepared according to the theme chosen that year for the Carnival. They must allow dancers and girls to be able to move freely in order to interact with the audience. They are usually circus-inspired. It takes about 40 hours to make the simplest and about 200 for the Costume that will be worn by the Carnival Queen.

La Reina del Carnaval / Queen of the Carnival

A finales de Otoño se elige la Reina del Carnaval de entre muchas otras chicas y otras ocho que la acompañarán en el desfile, cada una a bordo de una carroza de flores. La Reina del Carnaval será la encargada de representar a la ciudad de Niza durante todo un año, firma un contrato con una Agencia de Modelos y disfrutará de un fin de semana en una ciudad Europea.

At the end of Autumn the Queen of Carnival is chosen from among many other girls and another eight that will accompany her in the parade, each one aboard a float of flowers. The Queen of Carnival will be responsible for representing the city of Nice for a year, sign a contract with a Model Agency and enjoy a weekend in a European city.

Carrozas &/ Floats

Se diseñan específicamente para el Carnaval y de acuerdo al tema elegido ese año. Se decoran con flores frescas 72 horas antes del desfile por unas 20 floristas. Se usa un 75% de la producción local de flores. Es espectacular!

They are designed specifically for the Carnival and according to the theme chosen that year. They are decorated with fresh flowers 72 hours before the parade by about 20 florists. 75% of local flower production is used. It is gorgeous!

En total durante todos los Carnavales se celebran 5 desfiles de las Flores, 4 desfiles de las Luces, una batalla de Flores así como otros varios actos…podéis consultad el programa aquí.

Todo ha sido increíble. La hospitalidad que he recibido estos días y el recibimiento de sus ciudadanos ha sido algo espectacular. Me he sentido súper bien acogida. He podido descubrir una ciudad que sin dudas me ha encantado y me ha dejado con ganas de más y es que Niza tiene mucho que ofrecer. Sin dudas volveré porque este fin de semana Los Carnavales han sido todo y por ello han quedado sitios que no he podido visitar y que creo que sin lugar a dudas tienen que ser increíbles. Por todo esto, Mil gracias Niza. Au´revoir Carnavales. Esto no es un adiós, es un «Hasta la vista»! Volveré.

Everything has been incredible. The hospitality I have received these days from its citizens has been amazing.  I have felt very welcome. I have been able to discover a city that without a doubt has enchanted me and left me wanting more because Nice has a lot to offer. Without a doubt I will go back because this weekend «The Carnivals» have been everything and for that reason I have not been able to visit more places. For all this, Thank you very much Nice. Au’revoir Carnivals. This is not a goodbye, this is «Hasta la vista»! I will be back.
