Today I bring you one more chapter of the fascinating city of Stockholm.

Dónde dormir: Grand Central by Scandic Hotel.

Los días que visité Estocolmo me alojé en el Grand Central by Scandic Hotel. La decoración de estilo nórdico, por supuesto, me pareció espectacular así como los tonos cálidos que usa el hotel en su lobby y parte del salón de abajo, en gamas cobrizas y naranjas, quizá un poco imitando a los tonos del Old Town de la ciudad. Y no pasa, desde luego, desapercibido, su señal de neón diciendo “Hello Gorgeous!” ni su plataforma para los músicos o su batería, puesto que el lobby tiene música en directo ciertos días de la semana. Este edificio de 1885 tiene casi 400 habitaciones y el estilo del hotel no deja de recordarnos a Nueva York.

Para mi es imperativo a la hora de conocer una ciudad que el hotel esté bien situado por lo que este hotel es perfecto al tener una  ubicación céntrica (Kungsgatan con Vasagatan). Está a 5 minutos andando de la estación de metro T-Centralen con acceso a trenes, metro, autobuses y a poca distancia a pie del Arlanda Express (enlace ferroviario del aeropuerto), así como a todos los lugares de interés cultural, vida nocturna y las mejores tiendas de la capital.

El Hotel cuenta con un teatro propio, el Vasa Theatre, un lugar majestuoso situado justo enfrente de hotel donde actúan tanto artistas suecos como internacionales. El exterior no pasa desapercibido llamando la atención por su arquitectura. Este teatro ofrece lo último en términos de música y cultura. También es el escenario ideal para todo tipo de eventos, desde conciertos y estrenos de películas, hasta conferencias y otras presentaciones culturales aunque el hotel también ofrece exposiciones de arte y diseño fotográfico.

La firma de arquitectura más prestigiosa de Estocolmo, Koncept, está detrás del aspecto lúdico de este hotel que incluye grandes retratos que decoran las paredes.

When I was visiting Stockholm I stayed at Grand Central by Scandic Hotel and was an excellent choice. The Nordic style decoration -of course- is beautiful,  as well the warm tones that the hotel uses in its lobby and in part of the lounge , in coppery and orange ranges, maybe a little imitating the shades of Old Town in the city. And it doesn’t go unnoticed its big neon sign saying “Hello Gorgeous!” welcoming you as you enter nor its stage for musicians, since the lobby has live music on certain days of the week. This 1885 building has almost 400 rooms and the style of the hotel does not stop reminding us of New York.

For me it is imperative when I visit a city that the hotel is centric and this hotel is perfect because it is very well located  (Kungsgatan with Vasagatan). It is 5 minutes walk from the metro station T-Centralen with access to trains, subway, buses and within walking distance of the Arlanda Express (airport rail link), as well as to all the places of cultural interest, nightlife and best shops in the capital. 

The Hotel has its own theater, the Vasa Theater, a majestic place located directly opposite the hotel where both Swedish and international artists perform. The exterior does not go unnoticed attracting attention for its architecture. This theater offers the latest in terms of music and culture. It is also the ideal setting for all kinds of events, from concerts and film premieres, to conferences and other cultural presentations, although the hotel also offers art exhibitions and photographic design.

The most prestigious architectural firm in Stockholm, Koncept, is behind the playful aspect of this hotel that includes large portraits of personalities that decorate the walls.

Habitación del Hotel / Hotel Room

El hotel tiene 7 plantas y una planta subterránea donde curiosamente hay varias habitaciones, siendo ésta una de las cosas que me llamó la atención de Estocolmo: sus hoteles con habitaciones sin ventana y con escasos 10 metros cuadrados. Nuestra habitación se encontraba en el cuarto piso, con vistas al precioso teatro que está justo en frente del hotel y aunque la habitación era pequeñita estaba bastante bien organizado el espacio.

La habitación contaba de nuevo con esos tonos anaranjados que ahora asocio ya, sin darme cuenta, a Estocolmo. El fuerte vínculo cultural se puede ver y sentir en todo el hotel con líneas de canciones que decoran las paredes de las habitaciones. Nuestra habitación tenía varias fotos con citas icónicas tomadas directamente de algunos de los artistas de rock más importantes del mundo, como Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan o en nuestro caso, una frase de una canción de The Cardigans. El baño, pequeño pero súper bonito. Me encantaba la decoración del baño, en azulejos blancos y detalles en negro y muy resplandeciente en general. Los baños están equipados con productos de tamaño completo de la marca de belleza sueca de primera calidad Face Stockholm, lo que hace que su experiencia en la ducha sea relajante y una experiencia inolvidable. Dos espacios súper distintos en decoración, la habitación del baño, y ambos en equilibrio.

The hotel has 7 floors and an underground floor where curiously there are several rooms, this being one of the things that caught my attention in Stockholm: its hotels with rooms without windows and with only 10 square meters. Our room was on the fourth floor, overlooking the beautiful theater that is right in front of the hotel. And although the room was tiny, it was quite well organized space.

The room displays again a color palette with those orange tones that now I already associate, without realizing, to Stockholm. The strong cultural bond can be seen and felt throughout the hotel with lines of songs that decorate the walls of the rooms. Our room had several pictures with iconic quotes taken directly from some of the most important rock artists in the world, such as Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan or in our case, a phrase from a song by The Cardigans. The bathroom, small but super nice. I loved the decoration of the bathroom, in white tiles and black details and very resplendent in general. The bathrooms are equipped with full-size products from the top quality Swedish beauty brand Face Stockholm, which makes your shower experience relaxing and an unforgettable experience. Two very different spaces in decoration, the bathroom room, and both in balance.

Café, Bar y Restaurante / Cafe, Bar / Restaurant

Se nota que este hotel es uno de los puntos de encuentro para pasar el afterwork o para comenzar las veladas de las noches de los fines de semana. Se nota por la cantidad de gente que se ve que viene a tomar una coctel en su bar Teaterbaren, mientras disfruta de la música en directo o se disponen a cenar en su restaurante Teaterbrasseriet que ofrece ofrece un almuerzo bufé y una cena con platos clásicos suecos con un toque diferente. Puede disfrutar de cócteles creativos y una buena combinación de música, interpretada por un DJ en el bar acústico de arriba. Los huéspedes pueden ver actuaciones en vivo en la planta baja del Bistro, que es la antigua cafetería del teatro Vasa, que ahora forma parte del hotel. es un lugar tranquilo situado donde antes lo estaba el vestíbulo del Teatro Vasa. En el Bistro puedes disfrutar de la música ambiente que hay normalmente o de los espectáculos de música en directo o de las sesiones de DJ que tienen lugar Miércoles y Viernes de 17-21.30.

El Café ofrece una gran variedad de snacks así como café y té. La decoración no pasa desapercibida.

De nuevo, el café y el bar nos recuerda a Nueva York con sus altos techos, sus paredes de baldosas blancas, su suelo con baldosas en color, sus altas sillas de aire industrial y sus lámparas

El Acoustic Bar es ideal para una reunión después del trabajo con colegas, clientes o amigos. Si prefiere quedarse solo, siempre se puede reservar una parte del bar.

En definitiva, no te vas a aburrir dentro del  hotel ni en sus alrededores. Me encanta lo que se lee en la primera página del Menú del Bar:

This hotel is one of the meeting points to spend the afterwork or to start the evenings on the weekends. You can tell that by the amount of people who come to have a cocktail in its bar Teaterbaren, while enjoying live music or  having dinner at its restaurant Teaterbrasseriet , that offers a buffet lunch and dinner menu with Swedish classics but with a different touch. You can enjoy creative cocktails and a good combination of music, played by a DJ in the upstairs acoustic bar. Guests can watch live performances on the ground floor of the Bistro, which is the old cafeteria of the Vasa theater, which is now part of the hotel. At the Bistro you can enjoy the ambient music that is usually there or the live music shows or the DJ sessions that take place on Wednesday and Friday from 17-21.30.

The Café offers a variety of snacks as well as coffee and tea. The decoration does not go unnoticed.

Once again, coffee and bar are reminiscent of New York with its high ceilings, its white-tiled walls, its floor with colored tiles, its high industrial-air chairs and its lamps

The Acoustic Bar is ideal for a meeting after work with colleagues, clients or friends. If you prefer to stay alone, you can always reserve one part of the bar.

In short, you will not get bored inside the hotel nor in its surroundings. I love what you read on the first page of the Bar Menu:

“When life gives you lemons, add gin and tonic”.

Desayuno / Breakfast

Creo que después de la localización, la segunda razón por la que volvería sí o sí a este hotel es el desayuno.  Como ya sabéis, estoy acostumbrada a viajar mucho y me he quedado en muchos hoteles  de distintas categorías  y no he probado ningún desayuno tan exquisitamente rico y amplio en ningún otro hotel. El Grand Central by Scandic se lleva el número 10 en cuanto a desayunos. Como repito, no es sólo lo buenísimo que estaba todo y la gran calidad de los productos que usan en este hotel, que son todos orgánicos, sino la gran variedad de productos. Desde platos con distintos patés, distintos tipos de queso, miles de tipos de panes y tostas, su famoso salmon ahumado sueco -que estaba delicioso-, su variedad de fiambres, de frutas, sus amplia variedad de cereales, productos sin gluten, distintos tipos de leche, de coco, de soja, de almendra, sin lactosa, etc. Diferentes tipos de salsas, de mermeladas, de yogures, sus riquísimos waffles… y aquí es cuando digo que “Una imagen vale más que mil palabras” por tanto os dejo una amplia variedad para que veáis de lo que hablo. 

I believe that after the location, the second reason why I would return yes or yes to this hotel is the breakfast. As you know, I am used to traveling a lot and I have stayed in several of hotels of all categories and I have not tasted any exquisitely rich and extensive breakfast in any other hotel. The Grand Central by Scandic gets the rating score of 10 in terms of breakfast. As I repeat, it’s not just how great everything was and the great quality of the products used in this hotel -that are all organic- but the great variety of products. From dishes with different pates, different types of cheese, thousands of types of breads and toasts, its famous Swedish smoked salmon that was delicious, its variety of cold meats, fruits, its wide variety of cereals, gluten-free products, different types of milk , coconut, soy, almond, lactose-free, etc. Different types of sauces, jams, yogurts, delicious waffles … and this is when I say that “A picture is worth a thousand words” so I leave a wide variety for you to see what I speak.

Cómo llegar/ How to get there

Estocolmo tiene 4 aeropuertos: Arlanda que es el principal, Bromma, Skavsta y Västeras. Los cuatro están conectados con el centro de la ciudad por autobuses especiales que conectan con el aeropuerto.

Stockholm has 4 airports: Arlanda which is the main one, Bromma, Skavsta and Västeras. The four are connected to the city center by special buses that connect to the airport. 

El aeropuerto de Estocolmo-Arlanda

Os hablo aquí de cómo llegar a la ciudad desde el aeropuerto de Estocolmo-Arlanda que es el aeropuerto principal. Se encuentra a 40 kilómetros (25 millas) al norte de la ciudad de Estocolmo. El tren express Arlanda te lleva desde el aeropuerto de Arlanda al centro de la ciudad. La plataforma es de fácil acceso, debajo de los terminales de llegada. Salida: cada 15 minutos (la mayor parte del día). Tiempo de viaje: 20 minutos por tan sólo 240 SEK o 25 €.

Los autobuses del aeropuerto Flygbussarna salen cada 10 o 15 minutos entre el aeropuerto de Arlanda y la terminal de la ciudad (situada junto a la estación central). Tiempo de viaje a Arlanda: 35-45 minutos. Los autobuses también van a Liljeholmen a través de Karolinska, Fridhemsplan y Södermalm (50 min) y a Brommaplan a través de Kista y Sundbyberg. (54 min).

Los trenes de cercanías (operados por la empresa de transporte público en Estocolmo, SL) a Estocolmo parten dos veces por hora desde la estación central de Arlanda en Sky City. El tiempo total de viaje entre el aeropuerto y la estación central de Estocolmo es de 43 minutos.

También puedes tomar un autobús de Flixbus desde Arlanda. FlixBus conecta el aeropuerto de Arlanda con el centro de la ciudad de Estocolmo en 40 minutos. Los precios de las entradas comienzan en 29 SEK.

I am talking here about how to get to the city from the Stockholm-Arlanda airport which is the main airport. It is located 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Stockholm City. The Arlanda Express train takes you from Arlanda airport to the city center. The platform is easily accessible, below the arrival terminals. Departure: every 15 minutes (most of the day). Travel time: 20 minutes for only 240 SEK or 25€.

Flygbussarna Airport Coaches departs every 10-15 minutes between Arlanda Airport and the City Terminal (located next to the Central Station). Commuter trains (operated by the public transport company in Stockholm, SL) to Stockholm depart twice an hour from Arlanda Central Station in Sky City. Total travel time between the airport and Stockholm Central Station is 43 minutes.

Por Barco y Tren / By Boat and Train

Estocolmo es el principal terminal sueco del Mar Báltico. Más de 12 millones de pasajeros entran por el puerto de la ciudad cada año, haciendo de los cruceros y ferries dos de los principales medios para entrar a la ciudad. Los ferries conectan Estocolmo con Helsinki, Mariehamn y Turku en Finlandia. Riga (Latvia) y Tallin (Estonia) tienen conexión todos los días. Las principales empresas para viajar desde Estonia y Latvia es “Tallink” , y desde Finlandia son “Viking Line”  y “Silja Line” (perteneciente a la empresa Tallink).

Por tren, la Estación Central de Estocolmo —la más grande de la ciudad— recibe trenes de larga distancia. Tiene servicios diarios de Copenhague (5 horas), Oslo (6 horas), Narvik (14 horas), y desde junio del 2010 desde Bruselas.

Se puede llegar en tren a Estocolmo con la Swedish State Railways (SJ) desde Oslo y Copenhague. El viaje desde Oslo tarda alrededor de 6 horas y desde Copenhague 5 horas.También se puede llegar desde Alemania con el Deutsche Bahn (Tren Alemán) y desde Dinamarca con el DSB (Tren Danés). Los trenes llegan a la Estación Central de Estocolmo, en el centro de la ciudad. Allí encontrará oficinas de cambio, tiendas, cajeros automáticos y mostradores de atención al turista.

Desde la misma Estación Central se puede combinar con el metro (T-bana), siguiendo los carteles blancos y azules que dicen TUNNELBANA o “T”.En tren, Estocolmo conecta con las principales ciudades del país a través de los trenes SJ.

Stockholm is the main Swedish terminal of the Baltic Sea. More than 12 million passengers enter the city’s port every year, making cruises and ferries two of the main means of entering the city. The ferries connect Stockholm with Helsinki, Mariehamn and Turku in Finland. Riga (Latvia) and Tallinn (Estonia) are connected every day. The main companies to travel from Estonia and Latvia is “Tallink”, and from Finland are “Viking Line” and “Silja Line” (belonging to Tallink company).

By train, Stockholm Central Station – the largest in the city – receives long-distance trains. It has daily services from Copenhagen (5 hours), Oslo (6 hours), Narvik (14 hours), and since June 2010 from Brussels.

It can be reached by train to Stockholm with the Swedish State Railways (SJ) from Oslo and Copenhagen. The trip from Oslo takes about 6 hours and from Copenhagen 5 hours. You can also get there from Germany with the Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) and from Denmark with the DSB (Danish Rail). Trains arrive at Stockholm Central Station, in the center of the city. There you will find exchange offices, shops, ATMs and tourist service counters.

From the same Central Station can be combined with the metro (T-bana), following the white and blue signs that say TUNNELBANA or “T”. By train, Stockholm connects with the main cities of the country through the SJ trains.
