El próximo año 2018 Rusia va a anfitrión de la Copa del mundo de fútbol. Mucha gente vendrá a Moscú para el evento, por lo que en caso de que tú seas uno de los afortunados, debes visitar la ciudad más allá de los estadios de fútbol, ya que hay muchas cosas que hacer en Moscú y algunas de ellas son gratis o casi! Voy a decirte lo que puedes hacer sin gastar más de 1€ en esta megápolis impresionante.

Next year 2018, Russia is going to host the Football World Cup. Lots of people will come to Moscow for the event, so in case that you are one of the lucky ones to come, you must visit the city beyond the football stadiums, as there are so many things to do in Moscow and some of them are free or almost free!! I am going to tell you “10 things you can do for free” (or almost free)  in this impressive megapolis:

1.LA PLAZA ROJA/THE RED SQUARE

Por supuesto éste es el primer lugar que debes visitar en Moscú. Ya entenderás por qué. Hay pocos lugares en el mundo que te dejan sin palabras y por supuesto, la Plaza Roja es uno de ellos. Inicialmente fue la plaza del mercado de la ciudad antigua, pero hoy en día la Plaza Roja está rodeada por impresionantes edificios como el Museo Estatal de historia de Moscú, la Catedral de Kazan, la Puerta de la Resurrección – que es la entrada principal a la Plaza Roja-, el lujosos Centro comercial GUM, el Kremlin a un lado y la Catedral de San Basilio, el edificio más mágico en la Plaza Roja. Un dato curioso es que la “Plaza Roja” fue llamada “Ploshad Krasnyi” que significa en idioma ruso antiguo “Hermosa plaza” por lo que no supone que se llamaría “Rojo” sino la Plaza “Bella”. La palabra rusa “Krasni” cambió el significado de “rojo” en la lengua rusa actual.

Cómo llegar: en metro las estaciones de las más cercanas son Teatralnaya, Ploschad Revolyutsii o Biblioteka Im. Lenina.

Of course this is the first place you must visit while in Moscow. You´ll understand why. There are only few places in the world that leave you without words and of course, the Red Square is one of those iconic ones. Initially served as the old town market square, but nowdays The Red Square is surrounded by amazing buildings like the Moscow State Historical Museum, the Kazan Cathedral, the Resurrection Gate -that is the main entrance to the Red Square-, the GUM shopping mall, the Kremlin to one side and the Saint Basil Cathedral, the most magical building at the Red Square. One curious fact is that the “Red Square” was called “Krasnyi Ploshad” which means in old Russian language “Beautiful Square” so it wasn’t supposed to be called “Red” but “Beautiful” Square. That Russian word “Krasni” changed to the meaning of “red” in the actual Russian language.

How to get here: By metro the closest ones stations are Teatralnaya, Ploschad Revolyutsii or Biblioteka Im. Lenina.

2.GUM

Situado en uno de los lados de la Plaza Roja, es imposible perder este hermoso edificio con miles de luces en la fachada, que recuerda un poco a Harrods en Londres, no sólo en la arquitectura sino también en su función: es un Centro Comercial con tiendas de lujo , con marcas como Manolo Blahnik, Prada o Gucci. Debes entrar y echar un vistazo en el interior ya que por dentro también es muy bonito. Su techo de vidrio hizo el edificio único en el momento de la construcción al final del siglo XIX y se puede ir a comer caviar fresco o tomar un espresso dentro de lujoso Armani Café , pero si realmente quieres hacer lo que las Muscovitas disfrutan al máximo durante su visita al GUM, es ir a uno de los muchos puestos de helados y probar lo que los rusos llaman el helado más sabroso  de Moscú – y comen lo largo del año, incluso en invierno-.

Cómo llegar: misma dirección como la Plaza Roja.

Located at one of the sides of the Red Square it is impossible to miss this beautiful building with thousands of lights on its façade, that reminds a little bit to Harrods in London, not only in the architecture but also in its function: it is a luxury department store, with high spenders brands like Manolo Blahnik, Prada or Gucci. You should get inside and take a look to the interior as is also very beautiful and its glass roof made the building unique at the time of construction at the end of 19^th You can eat fresh caviar or sip an expresso inside posh Armani Café, but if you really want to do what Muscovites enjoy the most while visiting the GUM, go to one of the many ice cream stands and try what Russians called the most tasty ice cream of Moscow -and they eat them all year long, even in winter-.

3. CATEDRAL DE CRISTO EL SALVADOR/ CHRIST THE SAVIOR CATHEDRAL

This Cathedral is one of the marvelous examples of Orthodox Churches in Moscow, and it is one of the most beloved Cathedrals by Muscovites but at the same time it is one of the most controversial ones. An old Cathedral was erected here, but Stalin decided to demolish it in 1931 because he wanted to build the Palace of Soviets, a big skyscraper with a vast statue of Lenin on its peak. Thankfully the project was never built and instead, a big swimming pool was constructed here. After 20 years,  the government decided to demolish the pool and build another Cathedral, very similar to the older one. If you like records, this is the tallest Orthodox Cathedral in the World! The interior is very beautiful but be aware that is imperative to follow a sober dress code: no flip flops, Bermuda shorts, tank-tops, mini skirts, etc.   The best time for visiting it is during preach, because you can truly immerse yourself in the Orthodox rites as you admire the frescos with golden details on the walls and the ceiling . The Patriarshy Bridge that is in front of the Cathedral has one of the best views of Moscow and the best time for that view is at sunset.

4. RED OCTOBER

Esta zona situada en una isla del río Moskova, en el centro de Moscú, albergaba una muy famosa fábrica de chocolate, y de hecho, tomó el nombre de ella. Hoy en día se ha transformado en un distrito de arte, con muchas galerías de arte y fotografía, un Instituto de moda, arquitectura y diseño Instituto llamado Strelka y muchos agradables cafés, restaurantes y los clubs más famosos de Moscú. Camina alrededor de las callejuelas, que están llenas de graffiti por lo que conseguirás aquí muy buenas fotos! (PD: la fábrica de chocolate ya no existe y ha sido reubicada, tienen una tienda aquí donde usted puede comprar muy sabrosos estos recuerdos y tienen otra tienda también al lado de la Plaza Roja, mucho más turística )

Cómo llegar: la forma más sencilla de llegar es tomando llegar en metro hasta la estación de Metro Kropotkinskaya y luego de cruzar el río por el puente de Patriarshy que está en frente de Christ el Salvador Catedral. El área del octubre rojo es en el otro lado del río.

This area located in an island of the Moskova river in the center of Moscow used to house a very famous chocolate factory, from which it took the name. Nowadays it has been transformed into an art district, with many photo and art galleries, a Fashion institute, an Architecture and Design institute called Strelka and many nice cafes, restaurants and the most famous clubs in Moscow. Walk around the alleys, the area is also full of graffiti so you´ll get here great photos! (PS: the Red October chocolates still exists and although the factory has been relocated, they have a flagship store here where you can buy these very tasty souvenirs)

How to get here: The easiest way to get here is taking arriving by metro to Kropotkinskaya Metro Station and then crossing the river through the Patriarshy Bridge that is in front of Christ the Savior Cathedral. The area of Red October is on the other side of the river.

5. GORKY PARK

Sí, la canción del grupo Scorpions… Moscú tiene muchos parques, pero uno de mis favoritos y también de los Moscovitas es el parque de Gorki, oficialmente llamado Park Kulturi o “Parque de la Cultura”. Es súper bonito, y sobre todo, durante el verano, cuando el clima es agradable y los días son más largos (en verano  la puesta de sol es alrededor de las 22:30). Los locales intentan pasar la mayor parte de su tiempo fuera de sus casas en verano porque hibernan bastante tiempo en invierno estando dentro.  Durante este tiempo todo el parque está lleno de bicicletas, patinadores, clases de yoga o danza Latina. Sí, se puede ver a mucha gente bailando música Latina cerca del puente, ya la verdad es que son muy buenos!. Desde aquí, puedes ir el puente para ver el parque desde arriba y ver todos los barcos en su paseo turístico por el río Moscova. También hay muchas cafeterías  y restaurantes muy bonitos en el Parque Gorky y un montón de carritos de helado y de algodón de azúcar. Hay un pequeño lago dentro del parque donde la gente alquila botes de pedal. Puedes también aquí alquilar una bicicleta o unos patines y disfrutar de algunas actividades físicas y si te sientes con energía, ir al parque próximo después de Gorki, “нескучный сад» o el parque de entretenimiento, un pequeño bosque en el centro de Moscú, conectado al parque de Gorki.

Yes, the one in the Scorpion’s song.. Moscow has a lot of parks but one of my favorite, and also for the Muscovites, is the Gorky Park, officially named Park Kulturi. It has some special vibes and mostly in summer, when the weather is nice and the days are longer (in summer the sundown is around 10.30 pm). Locals try to spend the most of their time outside of their houses in summer because they hibernated enough time in winter being indoors. During this time whole park is full of bicycles, roller skaters, yoga classes or latin dances. Yes, you can see many people dancing latin music close to Pushkinsky Bridge, and they are very good at it!. From here can go to the bridge in front of you to see the park from above and to see all the boats in their touristic ride through the Moscova River. Also there are so many cool cafes and restaurants in Gorky Park and lots of ice-cream and cotton candy trucks. There is a small lake inside the park where people rent pedal boats. You can rent here a bicycle or some skates and enjoy some physical activities and if you feel with energy,  go to the next park after Gorky, “нескучный сад» or Entertaining Park, a little forest in the center of Moscow connected to Gorki Park.

6. CEMENTERIO DE NOVODEVICHY/ NOVODEVICHY CEMETERY

Es parte del convento de Novodevichy, uno de los monasterios más queridos en Moscú. Su cementerio ha enterrado a muchos ilustres rusos como Boris Yeltsin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Mikhail Bulgakov o Nikolai Gogol. Es una visita, no sólo por las personas importantes cuyas lápidas están aquí, sino también porque sus esculturas y monumentos  que hacen de este cementerio un  lugar fascinante para visitar en Moscú.

It is part of Novodevichy Convent, one of the most beloved Monasteries in Moscow. Its cemetery has buried many famous Russian people such as Boris Yeltsin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Mikhail Bulgakov or Nikolai Gogol. It is a must visit, not only because of the important people whose tombstones are here,  but also because its sculptures and immense monuments that make this cemetery a fascinating place to visit while in Moscow.

7. METRO TOUR

Esto sólo te costará 50 rublos (0,80€) y es un completamente necesario para moverte en Moscú, una urbe con más de 17 millones de habitantes . Como la mayoría de ustedes probablemente sabe, Moscú tiene uno de los sistemas de metro más bellos del mundo, si no la mayoría. Las estaciones son totalmente decoradas en mármol con arañas de cristal y coloridos mosaicos. Eso es porque el Zar Nicholas II quiso construir un palacio para el pueblo o por lo menos es lo que la gente dice, pero creo que el metro fue construido realmente tan magnifico como esto para impresionar a los dignatarios visitantes y otros invitados a visitar Rusia, no sólo para el pueblo ruso . Otra razón podría ser que en un país con una temperaturas tan frías como Rusia, la gente necesita pasar la mayor parte de su tiempo en interiores y en una gran ciudad como Moscú ir de una parte de la ciudad a otro toma tiempo así que lo mejor era construir apenas como eso , maravilloso. Entre todas las estaciones de metro I´ll recomiendo que visites al menos aquellos: Arbatskaya, Kievskaya, Komsomoloskaya, Mayakovskaya, Prospekt Mira y Ploshchad Revolutsii.

This only will cost you 50 rubles (0,80€) and it is a must do in Moscow. As most of you probably know, Moscow has one of the most beautiful metro systems in the world, if not the most. The stations are fully decorated in marble with crystal chandeliers and colorful mosaics. That is because the Tsar Nicholas II wanted to build a palace for the people or at least is what people says, but I think that the metro was actually built as magnificent as this to impress visiting dignitaries and others invited to visit Russia,  not only for Russian people. Other reason could be that in a country with such a cold temperatures as Russia, people need to spend the most of their time indoors and in a big city as Moscow going from one part of the city to another takes a while so the best idea was to build it just like that, marvelous. Between all the metro stations I´ll recommend you at least visit those ones: Arbatskaya, Kievskaya, Komsomoloskaya, Mayakovskaya, Prospekt Mira and Ploshchad Revolutsii.

8.FLACON

Es un espacio de diseño ubicado en una anterior fábrica de vidrio. Ahora aloja a muchas tiendas de ropa de diseñador, estudios creativos, salas de exposiciones y galerías de arte. Hay muchos graffitis en esta área por tanto es tambien uno de los lugares más fotográficos de Moscú. Además, en verano suelen poner una pequeña piscina y en los fines de semana hacen eventos como mercadillos, bazares, “master-classes”, conferencias, seminarios, etc..

It is a design area housed in a former glass factory. Now it is home of lots of designer clothing shops, creative studios, showrooms and art galleries. There are so many graffiti in this area that you can find the most photographic/ instagramer places here. Also, in summer it used to have a small pool and in the weekends they do some events as markets, bazaars, master classes, lectures, seminars of some festivals.

How to get there: Nearest Metro: Dimitrovskaya.

9.ELISEEVSKY MAGAZINE

Es una tienda de comestibles en el centro de Moscú, pero el interior es magnífico. Es famoso debido al lujo que derrocha este sitio. Una vez dentro parece que estás en un palacio, pero la curiosidad es lo que estás.  El Secretario de estado de Catalina “La Grande” ordenó construir un palacio para su esposa en un increíble estilo neo-barroco con enormes lámparas de araña. Ahora es propiedad de una de las cadenas de supermercados más famosas en Moscú. También puedes encontrar aquí una gran variedad de productos, desde caviar a 1000 dólares al kilo hasta todas las marcas más famosas de chocolates.

It is a grocery shop in the center in Moscow but the inside is magnificent. It got famous because of its luxury. Suddenly when you get inside it seems that you are in a Palace, but the curiosity is that you are. It happened that the secretary of State of Ekaterina the Great ordered to build a Palace for his wife in an amazing Neo Baroque style with huge chandeliers. Now it is property of one of the famous supermarket chains in Moscow. You can also find there a lot of variety of products, from 1000$/kg caviar to Red October chocolates.

10.IZMAILOVO KREMLIN

Está situado en un antiguo kremlin. ¿Pero, qué es realmente un Kremlin? Kremlin se llama a los muros que bordeaban las antiguas ciudades rusas ; es por eso una ciudad puede tener más de un kremlin. Esta hecha de madera pintada de blanco y es como viajar atrás en el tiempo, concretamente al siglo XVII. El conjunto incluye una serie de edificios como el Palacio del Zar, todos de madera y es una copia de la original, incluye también la Iglesia de San Nicolás  y muchos museos como el Museo de juguetes rusos, el Museo del Vodka, el Museo del Chocolate, entre otros y también hay muchas parejas rusas que se casan aquí por tanto hay un gran edificio solamente para bodas y estudios fotográficos. También aquí se monta un gran mercado con souvenirs típicos de rusos: matrioskas, carteles de propaganda Soviética, artículos de piel, Samovares, etcetera. Una vez que ya estás aquí, vale la pena una visita al gran estanque cerca del Kremlin .

It is located inside an old kremlin. But what really is a Kremlin? Kremlin is called the walls of the old Russian cities; that is why a city can have more than one kremlin. This one is made of white painted wood and it is like to travel back in time to XVII century. The whole complex includes the Tsar Palace, all made of wood and it’s a copy of the original,  also includes Saint Nicholas Church and lots of museums as the Museum of Vodka, Museum of Chocolate, Museum of Russian Toys among others but also there are many Russian couples who get married here so there is a big building only for weddings and photography studios. It is also a market for buying all the typical Russian souvenirs: matrioshkas, sovietic propaganda, fur, samovars, etc. Once that you are already here, the big pond close to the Kremlin is worth a visit.
